The problem I have with fantasy is this: I only like traditional fantasy (i.e. not today's or futuristic stuff, but your typical fantasy, in a medieval/ancient setting, with lots of mythology, Nature, and strange creatures), and this is about eye candy. A good part of the fun is being able to see such environments, and they are really hard to describe with words because they are full of colorful, never-seen-before objects. You can get away with futuristic stuff like "And there he was, in a dark, boxy alley where you wouldn't see shit", but how would you describe ※ this ※ though?

You could describe it. It'd just take you a long ass time

Well, you have a point Wiseman. But not all future fantasy settings are set in dark corridors. Those are lazy people. Anyway, describe this.

You posted the high-res version of a small pic I had and loved. This is the kind of thing I like to see in fantasy, and is very hard to describe in a book and picture in your mind. The people who draw pictures like this one or the one I posted earlier are geniuses.
This pic is not really futuristic, more like the "pseudo-industrial era" many RPGs are set in, i.e. lots of tubes, steam and metal, while keeping some of the good stuff like taste, art, traditional decoration, swords, etc.

Maybe you mean Steampunk? That kind of setting is awesome, i'm really looking forward to seeing Steamboy when it's out.
BTW, have you seen Osamu Tezuka's Meteopolis? Thats pretty awesome really.

IRT Cata: And my classmates we're out hearing they have to write a 300 words english essay on racism...
I did 528 words I think, but it's hard. But whining about 300 words is still crazy. Maybe because in an other language, but I donno. It was fun to write an essay in english, I really enjoyed it. =]
Most of the fantasy books Pete read I think are middle-age based, correct me if I'm wrong HK. Those pictures were totally beautiful, and imo it's impossible to describe it fully. But books can have those kinda pretty images, not just plain text, so I think it's not a problem.
I did not like middle-age stuff, rather went for the magical stuff combined with the present (i.e. Final Fantasy 8) I never like the OMG Laser weapons and futuristic world ends and all that jabble.
But now I'm getting into middle-age stuff (mainly thanks to Grandia II. ~ the best game ever) and a real tiny bit into future, but my favourite is still the stories played in the present, with magical stuff both from the past and with a little future "spice".

My fav style is the middle age in rpg. I cannot imagine an rpg without paladins, mages, etc or demons, undeads. Kay, there're a few expections(fe Fallout1-2) but usually these are the best rpgs
